The Falklands would be at risk if Jeremy Corbyn became prime minister because of his opposition to Britain’s conflict with Argentina over the islands, veterans of the campaign said last night.

Major-General Julian Thompson, who led British forces to victory in 1982, said that the idea of the Labour leader becoming prime minister filled him with horror.

The chairman of the territory’s parliament said that Mr Corbyn’s views on the conflict were “totally offensive” to islanders and an insult to British soldiers who were killed.

The Labour leader opposed the conflict at the time and has called for negotiations over a possible power-sharing deal with Argentina.
